Extended Description

Earl Yowytewa (1923-2006) was from First Mesa. He was known for his carvings, jewelry and his textiles. The Bear Katsina (Hon) is frequently distinguished only by color, such as white, black, blue or yellow. All Bear Katsinam are believed to be very powerful and capable of curing illness. They are also considered great warriors. Bear Katsinam appear most often in the Soyohim or Mixed Dances of springtime. This wonderful White Bear by Earl Yowytewa was most likely carved in the late 1970s. This is a fabulous representation of the bear katsina with his large fur covered paws and the fur cape. A great older piece.
