Extended Description

Stella Chavarria is the daughter of Teresita Naranjo, one of Santa Clara’s famous potters. Her work is very much influenced by her mother, except Stella works on a smaller scale. Stella also taught her two daughters to pot, Denise Chavarria and Sunday Chavarria. Water symbols – clouds, lightning, Avonyu, etc.– are frequently used, because they stand for life-giving rain, a necessity in the arid climate of the pueblos. The top portion has the symbols for eagle feathers, a sign of strength.
